God’s Gift To You

Ecclesiastes 3:9-13

What gain has the worker from his toil?  I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.  I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.

Ecclesiastes is one of my favorite books in the entire Bible and King Solomon is one of my favorite persons in the Old Testament.

The above passage talks about the most recurring theme from all of King Solomon’s writing.

The theme that’s been my words to live by, which is summed up in verse 13.

also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.

God’s gift to man; life, enjoy it, make the most of it because it is finite.

We need to realize that life is a gift from God and needs to be enjoyed.  When you take away all the superfluous crap, it’s eating, drinking and taking pleasure in our toil.

How has God shown us what a precious gift life and our time is?

I think that is answered in verse 11 which is the verse that really triggered me to write this piece.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

God has given us the knowledge to understand the concept of eternity.  Through understanding eternity we then understand how small and short our life is and that it is not to be wasted.

If you knew your life would never end or if you didn’t know your life was going to end you would waste it, just like you did when you were young, when old age and death seemed so distant.  When you were young at some early age you understood that concept of death but to you it was something that only happened to old people of which you were not going to be one for a very long, long time.

So life, even your own life wasn’t as precious to you as it should have been.

As you age death comes closer and closer.  In your heart you understand eternity but you know it’s not meant for you, and your life, God’s gift to you, becomes more and more precious with each passing day.

So without the concept of eternity we’d have no concept of death and would live our lives like animals.  We’d sleep eighteen hours a day and look for food the rest of the time.  We’d just survive.

Take pleasure in your life.  This is God’s gift to you.
