Take Away From Me The Noise

In previous posts I have written about how I can’t find any verses in the Bible where music is condemned or categorized as evil.

Then I came across this verse:

Amos 5:23

Take away from me the noise or your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen.

When I first read this I wrote a note to myself listing this verse and then shoved the note in my composition book.   I pulled it out a couple of weeks later and read the verse I thought maybe I finally found a verse where music is condemned.  But then I went back and read the verse in its context.

Read it below as part of Amos 5:18-24:

18  Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!

Why would you have the day of the Lord?

It is darkness, and not light,

19  as if a man fled from a lion,

and a bear met him,

or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall,

and a serpent bit him.

20  Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light,

and gloom with no brightness in it?

21  I hate, I despise your feasts,

and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

22  Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings,

I will not accept them;

and the peace offerings of your fattened animals,

I will not look upon them.

23  Take away from me the noise of your songs;

to the melody of your harps I will not listen.

24  But let justice roll down like waters,

and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

When put into context my thoughts were confirmed.

God does not condemn music .

Music will always be a gift to man from God and a gift from man to God.

What is condemned is not the gift but the presenter of the gift, the hypocrite, the dishonest presenter whose music and song is not honest, not from their heart.

That is the sin, that is the evil.

Why does God hate the feasts, assemblies and offerings of the Israelites at the time when Amos wrote this book?  Because they are not honest, they are done for man, for man to feed his vanity.

And so the songs, the music are no longer music but noise.

Music that is not honest is noise and thus God’s command “take away from me the noise of your songs…”
