Thanksgiving Should Be Every Day

Psalms 9:1

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;

I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

This is just a short piece for Thanksgiving.

Perhaps every day should be a day of thanksgiving.  Every day you open your eyes and draw a breath is another day of a gift we were given.  Every day you can wake up and have a thought and a feeling is more precious than any other thing on earth.

Yet we set aside one day a year to appreciate all that we have every day.

About all we do on that day is watch, eat and sleep.  We watch a parade that use to mark the beginning of the holiday season, but in order to sell more stuff, the start has been moved up to the autumnal equinox and will probably soon be year round.  We watch football, stuff our face and then plan on what stores we are going to hit for the Black Friday sales which now start on Thursday.

Thanksgiving events or days of giving thanks have been practiced by man for a long time. Usually the people were celebrating the gift of life as in: Thanks for the endless daily toil of sowing, caring and reaping that gave us enough food to get through another year, so half of us don’t die and the other half might have to eat them.

Or, thanks for the rain so our crops don’t fail and we don’t have to pick up what little we own and trudge across the desert begging for food.  Or maybe, thanks for our city walls holding up and repelling the hordes that are trying to come in to loot, pillage, rape and murder every one.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t, thanks for the 70 inch HD Smart TV, new iPhone and sneakers that now cost more than what a good used car use to cost.  And I’m sure it wasn’t, thanks for my team covering the point spread.  And I’m positive it wasn’t,  thanks for yet another riveting season of the Kardashians.

So this Thanksgiving Holiday, and every day, I’m going to be thankful for the gift of being able to get up each day and put one foot in front of the other.  Oh I’ll stray through the course of the year.  I’m sure I’ll gripe and moan about things that really don’t matter, but I am going to try.

When I start to complain I need to remember:

1 Timothy 4:4-5

For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,  for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

All is holy, it is man who turns it to evil.

Thanksgiving should be every day, every day we should be thankful for this gift of life.
