And the Lord said, because these people draw near with their mouth
And honor me with their lips
While their hearts are far from me
And their fear of me is a commandment taught by men
When I read these lines I wrote down the book, chapter and verse. At the time I wasn’t quite sure why I wanted to remember this verse I just knew I did.
The more I read it I came to the conclusion that I wanted to remember this one because it prophesizes my disillusion with the organizations that call themselves a church.
This verse is Isaiah telling the people of God’s disdain, for they are just going through the motions. They have God on their lips but not in their hearts.
I’m not one of those people who say “Look at all those people going to church and yet they sin, what a bunch of hypocrites.” To say that is simply moronic and I won’t address that any further.
What strikes me about this verse is how Isaiah is saying way back then what is still true today, “their fear of me is a commandment taught by men”.
I think of all the charismatic evangelists and preachers out there with their massive audiences and huge corporations. As with any entity, the larger the entity, the larger the corruption, but that’s not what bothers me that’s just the nature of man.
What bothers me is that the congregation is worshiping the pastor rather than worshiping God.
They believe in God, but they believe that whatever this authority figure tells them is what God is, says, does and wants. Therefore this figure controls them and thus their “fear of the Lord is a commandment taught by men.”
When I say controls them, I’m not speaking about some cult figure who tells them how to eat, sleep and drink. What I mean is he controls their perception of God, which is something each person needs to find and discover on their own.
In today’s society, that’s too much work. I’ll just let someone tell me what to think. I got to watch animal videos and see who had what for dinner.
The fear of God comes into your heart when you are alone. God is not placed in your hear by the lips of man. God is placed in your heart through honest living.
God is one on one and not gained through the corporate structure.
God is yours and yours alone.
God is yours to seek and find.
Guidance and help from your fellow man is one thing but man commanding God into your heart is impossible and corrupt.
It never ceases to amaze me how these words, that are thousands of years old still have power today.
