Unless The Lord Builds The House

Unless The Lord Builds The House

Psalm 127:1-2

Unless the Lord builds the house,

those who build it labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the watchman stays awake in vain.

It is in vain that you rise up early

and go late to rest,

eating the bread of anxious toil;

for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Unless the Lord builds the house.

What is the house that King David is talking about?  It is you, your body, my body, and our community as human beings.  To go through life, building a life and a community without God in your heart is vanity or as David’s son would say, vanity and a striving after wind. Continue reading

How TV Influenced My Life, Music, Romance

How TV Influenced My Life, Music, Romance

How TV Influenced my life, music, romance.

I wrote that note probably a month or two before pulling it out of my book to sit down and write about it.

When I wrote the note I was thinking about the influence television had on me.  For instance, without the Beatles being on the Ed Sullivan Show would music had been such a huge influence in my life?  Probably so but then the question would be what type of music?

The Beatles took me down the road to rock and roll.

What if my early big influential act would have been Hank Williams?  How would that have shaped my musical and life journey?

Through the years I discovered and still discover new influences from all genres and eras but the Beatles were the ones who started me down this path. Continue reading

Take Refuge In The Lord

Take Refuge In The Lord

Psalm 118:8-9

It is better to take refuge in the Lord

than to trust in man.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord

than to trust in princes.

You have heard some variations of the quote, “In God we trust, all others we verify”, or “all others we monitor”, or “all others bring data”.  This is what David is saying in these two verses but in a more eloquent and poetic manner. Continue reading

The Righteous Shall Live By Faith

The Righteous Shall Live By Faith

Romans 1:21-23

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things..

In verse 17 Paul writes:

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

The righteous shall live by faith.  So very hard to do. Continue reading

The Fear Of The Lord

The Fear Of The Lord

Psalm 112:1-3

Praise the Lord!

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,

who greatly delights in his commandments!

His offspring will be mighty in the land;

the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in his house,

and his righteousness endures forever.

I have written about “the fear of the Lord” three or four times in the past few weeks.  So maybe this will be my last time to write about it for a while. It’s a concept I like to write about.  I feel there is a lot of misconceptions about what is “the fear of the Lord”. Continue reading

Seek Righteousness

Seek Righteousness

King Solomon is one of my favorite persons in history.  The wisdom and knowledge that he shares in the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes has become the cornerstone for my philosophy of life.  Not only does Solomon give us wisdom and truth that is ageless, he does it with simplicity.  I love simplicity.

In 1 King 3:5-14 we learn how Solomon gained this wisdom.

Solomon has just been anointed king by his father David who passes away shortly after anointing Solomon.

Solomon has vanquished those who tried to usurp his reign and now realizes just how much power has been placed on his head.  Solomon will reign over, “a great people too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.”

God asks Solomon, “What shall I give you?” Continue reading

They Have Feet But Do Not Walk

They Have Feet But Do Not Walk

Psalm 115:2-8

Why should the nations say,

“Where is their God?”

Our God is in the heavens;

he does all that he pleases.

Their idols are silver and gold,

the work of human hands.

They have mouths, but do not speak;

eyes, but do not see.

They have ears, but do not hear;

noses, but do not smell.

They have hands, but do not feel;

feet, but do not walk;

and they do not make a sound in their throat.

Those who make them become like them;

so do all who trust in them.

A song of King David that translate as well today as it did yesterday, and as it will tomorrow. Continue reading
