Magic Stones

Proverbs 17:8

A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of the one who gives it;

wherever he turns he prospers.

King Solomon understood politics.  This verse is the very essence of politics, as it is now and as it will always be.  No matter which side, this verse is politics.

Here is the Merriam Webster definition of politics:

  • The art or science of government.
  • The art or science concerned with guiding or influencing government policy.
  • The art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government.

Number three got me, winning and holding control over a government.  It’s not about doing what is right, or doing what is best for the people being governed.  Most of the time what is right and what is best is unpopular.  Being unpopular never got anyone elected.

What it is best and what is right usually requires everyone to look at themselves and realize they are accountable for their actions.  That kind of talk doesn’t get anyone elected and it doesn’t get you power and influence.

King Solomon knew what gets you control and influence in government, from the office politics to world politics.  It’s the magic stone, the bribe.

You want something from a representative, a leader, a power broker, you’ve got to give something.  You’ve got to bribe them with something.  It happens from the top down. The whole food chain is infested.

Corporations get the leaders with large donations, the leaders get the average citizen with promises of well-being, safe and anxiety free living.  And now some of the leaders have graduated to outright cash bribes.  Everything should be free, everyone gets a guaranteed income for just existing, free cellphones, free education, all you have to do is vote for me.

Politics in Solomon’s time was a bit simpler.  Here’s some gold, here’s some silver, there’s my virgin servants and daughters for your pleasure.   Here’s what I want in return.

Today it’s basically the same, but we figured out ways to convince ourselves its all okay.  We’re more sophisticated, but it all boils down to this.  Politics and government is nothing more than a system of bribes.  You want something you have to ante up, you’d better find your magic stone.

To place government, which is based on bribes and they all are, in your heart as your protector and salvation is the work of a fool.  For when you run out of your magic stones you become their slave.
