You see a lot of people who claim to be very “spiritual” people. Most of these people like to advertise just how “spiritual” they are.
Spirituality isn’t painted on the side of a van, bus, trailer, car or house.
Spirituality is painted in your heart. It’s painted there for you and God to see and that’s all that matters.
Read Matthew 6:1-18
6 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.9 Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Your spirituality, religion or whatever you want to call it, isn’t something to wear on your sleeve and run around professing to the world.
There are verses in the Bible that talk about shining a light but a lot of people confuse shining a light with shining a light on themselves.
“Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.”
The verses about a light or shining a light do not say put the spot light on you. The verses do not say bask in your own self absorbed light of just how cool and spiritual you are.
What they say is shine that light on others so they may see through your good works.
“….that they may see your good works.”
Good works that is the focus, not you, not you doing the good works.
It says works, not speeches or intentions or really cool spiritual pictures on the side of your van, car, bus, house, trailer, or whatever.
It doesn’t say show and tell everyone what a spiritual person you are by posting some artsy picture or really prophetic quote by some ancient monk on the internet.
It doesn’t say be sure to give yourself some really cool name like “Spirit Rider”.
It says let them see by the light of your WORKS.
Couple that with Matthew 6:1-18 and it says shine your light by doing your good works anonymously. Keep it just between you and God.
Your religion, your spirituality is not what you say but what you quietly do each and every day.
