Evil Lies In The Heart

Evil lies in the hearts of man.

Mark 7:21

Far from within, out of the heart of man comes evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery.

My wife purchased a unique wall decoration.  It was a mask with two faces, some ram horns and a rat on the forehead.  We didn’t have any idea what it was, what is was about or where it may have originated.  All we knew was that it was a unique piece.

So my wife decided to post a picture on Facebook to see if any of her “friends” had any idea what it was or where it came from.  She was looking for any information on the piece.

Of course she receive the obligatory “likes” and “oh that is so cool” comments but no helpful information.

One individual lost their mind over this inanimate object.

They went off on this dissertation about how we need to rid ourselves of this man made object because it was evil.  We had to not only get rid of the piece but also cleanse our house of all the evil that this man made, inanimate object had brought into our house. They went so far as to point out that this man made object was part of an evil entity cited in the Hebrew Bible.

My wife was reading this and her response to me was the evil lies in the hearts of man, not in decorative wall piece.

How can this thing be evil?

My wife was correct.

Evil lies in the hearts of man.  Evil does not live in some piece of wood or stone or molded concrete statue.

We watch too much Hollywood entertainment and then base our perception of religion, spirituality and life on the entertaining fantasies that they create.  We envision things like dolls being possessed or an object cursed.

We don’t take the time to read, study and try to understand life.  Just as we do with politics, we let someone else tell us what we should think.

God tries to tell man right from the beginning that man made, inanimate objects have no power, no meaning when it comes to forces that move and affect life.

God give us this knowledge in the second commandment.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

God commands this not because he knows these images will possess some power, he commands this to keep us on the right track.  He commands this to teach us that they are just man made objects with no power, no gateway to the supernatural, no cosmic channel for forces beyond the grave.  To worship them for good or for evil is just pure folly.

The only thing that makes this hunk of metal, wood, stone or whatever, good or evil is what is set in our minds.  To believe that a man made object possesses any kind of power over you or your life is just plain ignorance.

Good and evil lies solely in the heart of every man.
