Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
This verse follows the verses that I wrote about in a previous post, These Things Are For Children. In that post I wrote about the Kingdom of God being in our hearts, and how the world comes along and fills our hearts with worldly things. We then allow these things to push out the Kingdom of God. Once this is done we burden ourselves with worldly desires and these burdens wear us down. Sometimes the burdens don’t allow us to realize the Kingdom of God was in our hearts and it is really still there if we just make the room for it. Tragically, sometimes they wear us down to the point of denying the existence of God.
In verses 28 through 30 Christ says, come to me, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
What does Christ mean?
The answer is pretty simple but the implementation is hard.
Christ is saying to remove the heavy burdens of the world, you must remove the yoke of pursuing worldly desires and things. That yoke becomes heavier the longer you keep it on your shoulders. That yoke will wear you down throughout your life, until you reach the point where it takes all of your efforts to keep it on your shoulders each day. It becomes heavier and heavier as you bear the burden of worldly desires and the opinions of others.
How do you remove this yoke? You remove it by realizing what Christ and the prophets have always preached. You are an individual. Taking care of that individual, that unique gift from God, is paramount.
When you realize and believe that living your life in righteousness is the value of your life, then these burdens begin to lift. Worldly desires are swept away. You will begin to find rest in your soul, because you are giving your soul the food that it needs.
When you realize you are an individual given the gift of life by God, then the Kingdom of God begins to push the worldly objects and desires out of your heart. You begin to see God in your heart and realize that you, the individual, are in control of your life. The world is superficial and so its burdens are meaningless and when you realize this, the yoke it used to enslave will been lifted.
The only burden you must bear is the commitment and discipline to live your life righteously. The only yoke you wear is to seek righteousness and live your life, your individual life as given to you by God.
