The Whip Will Not Come To Us

Isaiah 28:14-15

Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers,
    who rule this people in Jerusalem!
Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,
    and with Sheol we have an agreement,
when the overwhelming whip passes through
    it will not come to us,
for we have made lies our refuge,
    and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;

Isaiah is reprimanding the leaders in Jerusalem.  Isaiah lived during the time of 740 to 680 BC.  So Isaiah’s words speak of what was going on in ancient times.  But Isaiah could go to D.C. today, stand on the steps of the Capitol Building, speak these words and they would still be applicable.

Isaiah addresses the leaders as scoffers, those who scoff, speak of God scornfully, derisively and mockingly.  The leaders who scoff at righteousness and wish to make themselves gods who will define for all, their idea of righteousness.  And by all they mean everyone except themselves.  They will set the moral standards by which the unwashed masses will live their lives.  For the people they govern are uneducated and unenlightened. They cannot see the vision of the self-proclaimed gods.

The leaders believe themselves to be above death and certainly above their constituents.

…when the overwhelming whip passes through
    it will not come to us,

This means that when the shit hits the fan from all their narcissism and megalomania, they have insured themselves they will not feel the consequences of their actions.  They say, all our servants will do this be we gods will have our own club with our own set of rules.  For we are gods and deserve better than those beneath us.

Through their greatness they will live forever, to be held in high esteem as elder statesmen of the universe.  Their pride has swollen to the point where they see themselves as gods.  They realize death will come but they will be immortalized as images to be worshipped throughout time.

So why do these intelligent, well educated, seemingly sane people believe their own lies?  Isaiah says:

for we have made lies our refuge,
    and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;

In their palaces and great halls they live as gods and so see themselves as such.  They are gods, who for their services to their subjects deserve only the finest, only that which was meant for gods.  They deserve better than their servants. And so, on the backs of their servants they insure they only have the best of everything.

But this is nothing new and will never change.  This is how it was before, during and after Isaiah.  It is the same 2700 years after Isaiah and it will be the same 2700 years from today.
