I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
I don’t have much to say about this verse, but I didn’t want to skip over it either.
“I have overcome the world.”
I think this is a directive for all of us. Our basic primal instinct is to survive, and God has given us everything we need to survive. God has given us all the materials, and the knowledge to use those materials for our survival. With all our technological wonders, we do not conjure up anything out of thin air. Whatever we have, has been here from the beginning.
God has given us the materials for survival, the knowledge for survival, and the laws for survival, which are the Ten Commandments. Follow those rules, use your knowledge and the materials given by God, and you will survive.
But the world gets in the way and causes us to want and desire worldly things. We covet and sometimes go from coveting up the chain to breaking the other laws to get what we want.
We take the materials for granted and forget about the life, the soul that God has given us. The world overcomes us and we become slaves to the world.
“In the world you will have tribulations…”
Worldly things and desires lead to tribulations, problems and sin. To overcome sin you must overcome the world. Overcome the world and you will overcome sin.
