1 Corinthians 10:29
I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience?
Paul asks the question, why should another person dictate to me my sense of right and wrong? God has endowed us with an innate sense of right and wrong. This sense, is only changed by the world. We become driven by the world, its desires and pitfalls.
Paul writes of the individual. He is telling us that when you honestly know you are doing what is right, no one has the right to tell you otherwise. You conscience should be your guide. That is your right as an individual.
In verse 31 Paul tells us how to stay with the moral rules set by an honest conscience:
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
We are all individuals who have been given the gift of life by God. We’ve been granted a conscience, the guide to doing all for the glory of God. No other person, organization, or government has the right to determine your conscience, only you do. This is your liberty.
