Silent Dogs

Isaiah 56:9-12

All you beasts of the field, come to devour—
    all you beasts in the forest.
His watchmen are blind;
    they are all without knowledge;
they are all silent dogs;
    they cannot bark,
dreaming, lying down,
    loving to slumber.
The dogs have a mighty appetite;
    they never have enough.
But they are shepherds who have no understanding;
    they have all turned to their own way,
    each to his own gain, one and all.
“Come,” they say, “let me get wine;
    let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
and tomorrow will be like this day,
    great beyond measure.”

The heading of these verses in the English Standard Version of the Bible is “Israel’s Irresponsible Leaders”.

Isaiah is speaking to Israel who has stop walking in the way of the Lord.  Isaiah is pointing out that their deviation from God and righteousness is coming from the top down.  He is speaking of leaders who have turned from doing what is right for the people and are only doing what is best for the leaders’ own benefit.  And of course if you have read some of my previous posts you will know that I see this ancient commentary on society as being as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.

This is the state of politics and the leaders of today.  This is how it is, how it was and how it always will be.

“His watchmen are blind; they are without knowledge.”

Today’s political leaders are born of blind ambition.  They do not look at, or see those they are to serve.  They don’t see those that they shepherd.  Their only sight is their political goals and their constituents are numbers, data, and statistics on a page that will help them achieve their goal.  These political leaders have no knowledge of their constituents other than what they need to know to maintain their power.

They are silent dogs who cannot and will not bark.  They cannot do anything to make a difference.  They will not do what is right because that will not get them elected.

These political dogs do have an appetite, an appetite that can never be satisfied.  Their lust for power takes precedent overall things.

The politicians have no understanding of righteousness or of being a good shepherd.  It is not because they don’t have the intellect.  It is because truth, righteousness and being a good shepherd are not part of the political process.  And like Isaiah says, they all, and I mean all, both sides and those in the middle, they all turn to their own way, each to their own gain.

They intoxicate the flock with lies and words of ease and pride.  They tell us everything is going to be just great as long as we give them control and keep them in control.  Life will be easy and burdens will disappear.  Just have another drink and let us take care of everything.

And we do.  Why? Because we hear what we want to hear.  We hear what we want to believe is the truth.

So like Israel being plundered and enslaved by Babylon, so are we by these silent political dogs who cannot protect the flock of which they have been given charge.  So it was, so it is, and so it will be.
