The (One Legged) Cricket Song

Like a one legged cricket on a hot driveway

That’s how I feel most of my day

Going in circles, heat seared mind

Watching as the rest leave me behind

Like a one legged cricket on a hot driveway

Waiting to become some bird’s prey

Future swoops down and gobbles me up

Ground in a gizzard of stone and rock

Like a one legged cricket on a hot driveway

Pushing to the left every day

Hoping tomorrow I’ll have better luck

And I don’t get crushed by a pickup truck

My wife made it to the basement steps

The kids are larvae in the earth’s cool depths

I was just trying to make ends meet

Until I lost one of my feet

Like a one legged cricket on a hot driveway

Praying for something to take me away

Pick me up, put me in the grass

Cool my belly, take the heat off my ass

Like a one legged cricket on a hot driveway

Is this how I’ll be the rest of my days

Wishing for the rain to wash the pain

Push me down the sewer drain

Others jump and almost fly

I keep pushing to one side

Stuck on top this asphalt hell

Feel my guts turn into gel

Like a one legged cricket on a hot driveway

Will it be different or the same today

Will I burn, will I fry

Will anything happen before I die

Like a one legged cricket…………..
