Silent Dogs

Silent Dogs

Isaiah 56:9-12

All you beasts of the field, come to devour—
    all you beasts in the forest.
His watchmen are blind;
    they are all without knowledge;
they are all silent dogs;
    they cannot bark,
dreaming, lying down,
    loving to slumber.
The dogs have a mighty appetite;
    they never have enough.
But they are shepherds who have no understanding;
    they have all turned to their own way,
    each to his own gain, one and all.
“Come,” they say, “let me get wine;
    let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
and tomorrow will be like this day,
    great beyond measure.”

The heading of these verses in the English Standard Version of the Bible is “Israel’s Irresponsible Leaders”.

Isaiah is speaking to Israel who has stop walking in the way of the Lord.  Isaiah is pointing out that their deviation from God and righteousness is coming from the top down.  He is speaking of leaders who have turned from doing what is right for the people and are only doing what is best for the leaders’ own benefit.  And of course if you have read some of my previous posts you will know that I see this ancient commentary on society as being as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. The Meekness Of Wisdom

The Meekness Of Wisdom

James 3:13-16

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.   But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.  This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.  For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

James, who is believed to be the half brother of Christ, wrote these words over 1900 years ago.

I find these words to ring true today, and I thought I would share how true they are for those who profess to serve us each day in the political world.  The point I wanted to make with these prophetic words is to those who delude themselves into believing that our “representatives” and “leaders”, no matter which side, are there for some altruistic desire to make this world a better place for you and me.

That belief, that sentiment, is pure bullshit! Continue reading

An Appalling And Horrible Thing

An Appalling And Horrible Thing

Here are some quick thoughts on a Bible verse that caught my attention.

The verse is Jeremiah 5:30-31:

An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: the prophets prophesy falsely and the priest rule at their direction.  My people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

When I read those two verses something inside my head told me to remember them.

When I read it my thoughts do not go to the ancient temples and courts of Israel.  My thoughts go to the modern temples and courts of Washington DC.

I thought how once again I have come across ancient Biblical prophesies that are applicable today. Continue reading

When Our Drink Is Gone

When Our Drink Is Gone

Hosea 4:18

When their drink is gone they give themselves to whoring, their rulers dearly love shame.

I knew what this meant to me when I first read it and wrote down the verse.  But I thought I would read what scholarly people think of it and compare my thoughts with theirs.

The scholars and theologians say this verse deals with the tribe of Ephraim, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, that has become a bunch of drunks, alcoholics, the people along with their leaders.

That may be true for the times this book was written but here is my modern day assessment of this verse.

Society today loves its “feel good”. Continue reading

They Will Exalt Themselves

They Will Exalt Themselves

I am writing this post in the midst of a presidential election year.

It is an election year that has been and promises to be a real circus. But then again aren’t they all.

As with every presidential election cycle or really any election cycle there is a plethora of promises to change everything and make it all better.  And just as in all previous election cycles there are plenty of potential voters out there ready to lap up the lies and I’m talking lies all around, for and from everyone.
