Debt – A Way Of Life

Debt – A Way Of Life

Deuteronomy 15:6

For the Lord your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.

“…but you shall not borrow…”

I believe God is advising Israel on how to stay wealthy and self-sufficient, as a nation and a people.  I believe God is advising us, on a personal level, on how to stay in control of your life.

I’m not going to get into the amount of debt we have as a country, nor the amount that other countries owe our country.  I guess I just wanted to write about another example of advice and wisdom that has transcended through the ages. Continue reading

Muzzle The Ox

Muzzle The Ox

Deuteronomy 25:4

You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn.

Here is the commentary of biblical scholar Matthew Henry in regards to this verse.

“This is a charge to husbandmen.  It teaches us to make much of the animals that serve us.  But we must learn, not only to be just, but kind to all who are employed for the good of our better part, our souls.”

“Be kind to all who are employed..” Continue reading

Two Kinds Of Weights

Two Kinds Of Weights

Deuteronomy 25:13-16

“You shall not have in your bag two kinds of weights, a large and a small. You shall not have in your house two kinds of measures, a large and a small. A full and fair weight you shall have, a full and fair measure you shall have, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. For all who do such things, all who act dishonestly, are an abomination to the Lord your God.

These verses are a part of the laws passed down from God to Moses.  Moses passed them down to the Jews.  This law is God instructing the Jews to treat everyone equally and to not cheat your fellowman.  I don’t think anyone, Jew, Christian, atheist or whatever, can argue with that.  All of this goes back to the Ten Commandments and obeying them.

What would cause you to cheat your fellowman?  When you covet, covet something they have or something you don’t have.  So you lie and cheat (bear false witness) to get it.

This is just God giving us a little more detail into living a righteous life.  We humans can be very stiff necked and thick headed. Continue reading

How To Deal With Good And Evil

How To Deal With Good And Evil

Deuteronomy 30:15-20

See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.  If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.  But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess.  I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,  loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

These six verses are what follows the verses I wrote about in my previous post It Is In Our Hearts.  In verse 11 through 14 Moses tells the people of Israel that the word of God is very near.  It is in your heart and in your mouth.

In verses 15 through 20 Moses continues by letting the Israelites know how simple life really is. Continue reading

It Is In Our Hearts

It Is In Our Hearts

Deuteronomy 30:11-14

For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.  It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’  Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?  But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.

Moses is giving the Israelites the commandments of God before they make their trip into the Promised Land, a trip which Moses will not make.

These verses hold a special meaning for me.  Continue reading

Seek God – The First Law

Seek God – The First Law

2 Chronicles 30:18-19

For a majority of the people, many of them from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover otherwise than as prescribed. For Hezekiah had prayed for them, saying, “May the good Lord pardon everyone who sets his heart to seek God, the Lord, the God of his fathers, even though not according to the sanctuary’s rules of cleanness.”

Hezekiah was the thirteenth king of Judah.  According to the Old Testament, he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.  Hezekiah cleansed and restored the temple of the Lord and returned Judah to the laws and traditions as set down by Moses.  This included the celebration of the Passover.

Many people came from tribes outside of Judah to celebrate the Passover.  They had not consecrated or cleansed themselves per the laws of Moses.  Hezekiah understood what was truly important about this feast.  It was a milestone for all the tribes of Israel to be returning to their laws and traditions and once again celebrate the Passover.  He knew it wasn’t about following processes and procedures.  It wasn’t about having all your I’s dotted and T’s crossed.
