The Father Of Music

The Father Of Music

Genesis 4:21

His brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipes.

It’s funny how you can look at something every day and not notice some significant details.  It’s funny how you can drive by the same location on your way to work, look at the same scenery and then one day see something that you never saw before.  It was always there but you were so busy thinking about your upcoming day or distracted by something more prominent.  You never noticed that piece of interest on an otherwise familiar landscape.

I have read the book of Genesis a number of times and never really took notice to or thought about the verse cited above.  But this time I did and decided to write it down.

I never realized that Jubal was considered the first musician. Continue reading

I Miss The Records, But Love The Technology

I Miss The Records, But Love The Technology

There sure have been a lot of changes in the music world over the past 30 years.

Thank you Captain Obvious, but please humor this old man.  You younger ones think most of this stuff has been there forever.

The changes have their pros and cons, for instance the mammoth changes in recording technology.

When I left the music world if you wanted to do any type of multi track recording with any semblance of a professional sound you had to spend thousands of dollars for just a few songs. Continue reading

What’s So Great About Frank Zappa?

What’s So Great About Frank Zappa?

The other day I was reading a thread in a forum.  I don’t recall what started the thread or what took me to the forum, but one of the comments in the thread was about Frank Zappa.

One participant wrote “what’s so great about Frank Zappa”.  They went on to write that everyone thinks he was so wonderful yet he never had a hit and just made weird music.

I was a little taken aback by the comment but I can understand why some people would feel that way.

My introduction to Frank Zappa’s music was in high school probably around my sophomore or junior year.  Someone brought “Billy the Mountain” to a party and of course a record with cussing in it was cool to all the teenage boys.  (This was well before it was as commonplace as it is today.)

Frustrated Musician

Frustrated Musician

I am not a frustrated musician.

When I first decided to return to music I went to my friend in Pittsburgh who I had worked with and played with at his studio.  He put together a little reunion of our band from back in the seventies.  We rented a studio for the weekend and went in and just played some of the songs from the band days.

It was a really cool way to welcome myself back to music.

Now some people that we knew when we were a band and some people that had worked at the studio came to watch and enjoy this little two day get together. Continue reading

Am I Too Old For Music?

Am I Too Old For Music?

Sometimes I think the subject for today is what all this writing is about.

The question that keeps going through my mind, the one that causes me to second guess myself is this.  “Am I too old to experience success in the music business?”  Or maybe I should say, “Am I too old to experience success as a musician?”

Why do I ask myself that question?

I have been experiencing something that I have never experienced before.   I can’t find a band.

I know that I have written about this before and in my self indulgence I am going to write about it again.

In yesteryears when I wanted to be in a band I was in one. Continue reading
